Correcting spoke line

Outbound spokes need to be bent greater than 90 degrees at the shoulder, in order to achieve an optimal alignment with the rim. If you look at the wheel closely, after lacing, you'll note that the outbound spokes are badly bowed in their alignment. To correct this, you must physically bend the spokes over at the shoulder. There are lots of different techniques for doing this, and it takes time to get a "feel" for it. But know that you really do have to apply a significant amount of force--you can't be shy about it, but at the same time you don't want to create a double bend--i.e., a bend at the shoulder and also at the edge of the flange. That's a bad thing... Be very careful and work on feeling the point where a spoke is just bending as opposed to being deformed.
