The Smoke that Thunders
Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) is the name of this waterfall in the local language. David Livingstone was the first European to view the falls in 1855 and he named his discovery Victoria Falls, in honour of Queen Victoria of Britain. Victoria Falls is a waterfall in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest, based on its combined width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water. At this time of the year the high water flow impairs visibility from the ground, the excuse I needed to take a helicopter flight.
