hawk vs. juvenile cattle egret

This morning at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach, FL, this hawk (Cooper's hawk I believe) attacked a juvenile cattle egret just as it landed on a tree, taking it down to the ground. The hawk won the battle; however (I'm not sure why), the hawk let the cattle egret crawl away so it then swam (not flew) back to its nesting island. Hopefully, the cattle egret will recover.
