Valeriusplein - Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Valeriusplein 31/05/2021 18h38

The Valeriusplein is a square in Amsterdam South, between the Koninginneweg and the Lyceumbrug. It is named after the Dutch songwriter (and notary) Adriaen Valerius. North of the square, on the other side of Koninginneweg, are Emmalaan and Emmaplein. On the north side, Valeriusstraat runs along the square.

De Lairessestraat is located on the southeast side of the square, and Cornelis Krusemanstraat is an extension of this street to the southwest of the square.

In 1960, the concrete sculpture Vertical composition by the sculptor Henk Zweerus, which was inspired by the Belgian artist Georges Vantongerloo, was placed in the middle of the park.

Henk Zweerus was commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam to make this standing column, a composition of stacked concrete blocks of various sizes. An image he made for this work is the 'Horizontal composition' for the Leidsebosje.

Henk Zweerus (1920–2005) was a student of the artist Jan Bronner. He taught at the Technical University in Delft.
