51/52 Winter Solstice

52 Weeks Project

A pitstop at Zoeterwoude along the N206 when driving from Amsterdam to Zoetermeer...

Location: A Transferium along the N206 and A4 near Zoeterwoude. Parking is a shared parking of a roadside La Place restaurant.

Coordinates: 52°12'72" N 4°49'45" E

Reason: Normally it takes about 45 minutes to drive the 55 kilometers from my house to Zoetermeer. Due to a fatal traffic accident on the A4 highway the highway was closed for hours and I was rerouted through the center of Leiden which was one huge traffic jam as well. It took me in total 1h30 so I decided to take a selfie to celebrate the shortest day of the year 2019.

Winter Solstice: Around the 21st of December the days are the shortest of the year and from this day on the days will become longer again till around the 21st of June in the next year. The December solstice, is the solstice that occurs each December – typically on Dec 21, and can vary ± 1 day according to the Gregorian calendar. In the Northern Hemisphere, the December solstice is the winter solstice, whilst in the Southern Hemisphere it is the summer solstice. It is also known as the southern solstice. [ Wikipedia ]
