VANITÉ (2017)
Philippe Pasqua
Philippe Pasqua's first work, produced in 1997, was embedded with a skull that has, over the years, become the main theme and emblem of his work. The work he displays on the esplanade of the Oceanographic Museum is his largest piece; the solid bronze and polished sculpture is 3.70 meters tall and weights 1 ton. The skull illustrates the remnants of humand after death while the butterflies symbolize lightness, the immaterial flame of the departing soul. The work is part of the tradition of the vanities, a major component of Art History defined as the allegoric figure of death, of the passage of time, of the fragility of life in contrast to the emptiness of human occupations.
Height: 3.70 meters, Weight: 1 tom
