In the presence of such charity, the most rabid bigot, the most liberated freethinker, even the most ambitious of politicians, must be humbled. As Robert Louis Stevenson would testify only five years later, after he had seen Mother Marianne and the sisters attending the lepers at Molokai, in their presence "even a fool is silent and adores."
