Seventy-two animals, some highly endangered, make up the carousel. The animals are actually handcarved and can be seen going ‘round and ‘round on The Carousel at Brookfield Zoo, the largest nonrestored wooden carousel in the country. The fully accessible Carousel, which took approximately 15 months to create, also features three stationary animal chariots.
The ride has four rings of animal figures representing a variety of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians that were selected from a lengthy list of species. The Carousel has everything from anteaters to zebras! Each animal figure is meticulously handcarved from sustainable basswood and then intricately painted.
