Gasworks

7DOS Lighting - Sunday

This is the gasometer near where I live. I can look out of my window and see it down the street.

This night it looked quite spectacular in purple. The light display changes.

The area here has been subject to redevelopment from what was once an industrial area adjacent to the river and shipping wharves.

The gasometer or gas holder will be familiar to many older people as they were a common sight in cities in years gone by.

One was kept here as a landscaped feature, used for open space and some special events, and is immediately adjacent to the shopping centre.

The suburb's present role as an up-market residential suburb belies its industrial past. Timber yards, asbestos works, wharves and woolstores once dominated the eastern side of the suburb. The tall iron structure of the No. 2 gasholder on Skyring Terrace is a remnant of the Newstead Gasworks, which was established in 1887 as Brisbane's second gas works.
