Villa Mimbelli: the eclectic architecture in Livorno (IT)

*****************************************************************************

The family Mimbelli was originally from Croatia. In the nineteenth century the spouses Mimbelli Francesco and Enrichetta Rodocanacchi bought this property. In 1865 work began on the expansion of the villa and the surrounding park. The couple called the architect Vincenzo Micheli for the project and to direct the work. The villa has three floors and a very elegant facade. Very interesting decorative elements adorn the facade. A special feature of the villa is the main entrance, wide enough to permit the passage of carriages. The entrance is in fact covered by a covering in cast iron. A second entrance in the rear of the villa is characterized by several large arches. This second entrance allows direct access to the dining rooms.

The artist Annibale Gatti was called to decorate with stucco ceilings the main rooms of the villa. The owners, like many other noblemen and wealthy professionals of the nineteenth century, loved to enrich their rooms with exotic elements and furnishings. In the case of Villa Mimbelli we find a real taste exotic room, the room used as a Moorish smoking room. Inside this room there are stucco and decorative elements typical of the Middle East and the Islamic world. The staircase connects the ground floor with the upper floor and it is decorated with cherubs in glazed ceramic.

In 1994 in the villa opened a museum dedicated to the artist Giovanni Fattori, a macchiaiolo artist. The large park is open to visitors free of charge and is rich in rare and exotic plants such as some palm trees from the Canary Islands. In the property there is an open air theater built in the twentieth century and a private chapel.

they are made with the eye, heart and head.”
