Dreaming of Christmas
Well, actually, looking for an excuse to start eating the Christmas stollen! As the nights draw in, it gets increasingly difficult to take photographs in the late afternoon — any artificial light source overwhelms what little natural daylight is available and tends to be over bright. The solution it to take two shots — one exposed just for the ambient daylight, without lamps, candles, etc lit and then a second with the light source lit and a 3ish stops less exposure to just target the extra light. Composite together, with the darker shot in screen mode over the daylight shot and you have the perfect 'combined' exposure.
