Halloween / Samhain 2017. It's almost Samhain and time for my yearly spooky image — these always involve a massive amount of extra work! The wand is hand-carved from fallen hawthorn tree. Sanded and beeswaxed. The skull is a resin replica, hand painted with boiled walnut husks to get the right patination then lightly polished with beeswax. Technically, this is mostly a single shot, photographed in my kitchen, onto a black background then the misty trees composited in. The exposure was around 5 seconds giving me time to manually fire a hand-held flash across the burning incense to show the smoke (which took about 20 takes to get approximately where I wanted it).
