Ardvreck Castle, Assynt, Scotland

UK & International Landscape Photography Workshops & 1-2-1 Tuition www.melvinnicholson.co.uk

This wonderful ruins of Ardvreck Castle stand dormant on the shoreline of the six mile long Loch Assynt.Thought to have been built around 1590, this castle was owned by the Clan MacLeod who at that time owned Assynt it seems.

This three storey castle was once much larger than the present ruins and it housed a wall garden and a a formal courtyard. These days all that sadly remains is the tower and part of the defensive wall and when the waters of the loch reached very high levels, the peninsula that the castle stands on can be cut off from the mainland (Wikipedia).

Either way this is a wonderful subject to photograph at sunrise. There is also the shell of the nearby Calda House, a 1726 mansion built by the second Kenneth MacKenzie of Assynt for his wife who thought that castle opposite was too auster and uncomfortable.

Anyhow, have a great Thursday everyone, I am about to take my lovely group of clients off out to capture the sunrise colours behind Suilven at Loch Druim Suadalian.
