British Rail Southern Region: 2-BIL Unit 2141

Leading a down Alton/Portsmouth & Southsea stopping train away from Walton on Thames. These trains left Waterloo every 30 minutes, running non-stop to Surbiton then all stations to Woking where they divided, the front four cars proceeding to Alton and the rear four to Portsmouth & Southsea. I can't remember the exact timing, but the separation and reconnecting at Woking was performed very smartly considering that screw couplings were used and there was a multiplicity of electrical connections to deal with.

Another trivia item concerning these trains was the odd consecutive series of stations at which they called, all starting with the letter W - Walton on Thames, Weybridge, West Weybridge, West Byfleet, Woking and Worplesdon. West Weybridge was renamed Byfleet and New Haw around 1960, breaking the sequence.
