medievalpoc: Unknown Japanese Artist Christian Martyrs of Nagasaki Japan (1622) unknown media, unknown dimensions Chiesa del Gesù (Rome, Italy) This incredible painting depicts the execution of Christian converts and missionaries after the Tokagawa shogunate banned Catholicism in Japan in the mid-1600s. Visible in the enormous crowd of spectators are of course many Japanese people, as well as Black and White Europeans. There are two main groups of Christians being executed; the largest of whom are being burned at the stake toward the center of the painting, and another group being beheaded “below” them.
