The installation builds upon of a collection of images and audio documents refering to the processes and tools used in transcommunication (communication with the dead) and the materialization of ghosts. It consists of portraits of mediums who by recording their immediate sound environment attempted to pick up voices from the other side. In order to reintroduce transcommunication concerns for decoding invisible matter (radio and light waves...) into perceivable data, these images of mediums undergo a double transformation – first they were “translated” into sound files and then “retranslated” back into images. Far from being a transparent process, this series of computational transcodings alters the images, bringing to mind the physico-chemical images of 19th century spirit mediumistic photography. In this manner, the occult dimension of the scenes work their way into the very matter of the image.
Une collection d’images et de documents sonores sur les procédés et outils utilisés dans le domaine de la transcommunication (communication avec les défunts) et de la matérialisation des fantômes. Dans cette installation sont présentées des portraits de médiums qui enregistrent leur environnement sonore à la recherche de voix de défunts à capter. Afin de réintroduire les enjeux de la transformation d'un « matériaux invisible » (ondes radioélectriques, lumineuses...) à une information intelligible sur lesquels se basent les pratiques de transcommunication, les images de médiums sélectionnées ont subi un double transcodage - celles-ci ont été « traduites » en fichiers sonores, avant d'être « retraduites » en images. Loin d'être un processus transparent, cette série de transcodages altère les images d’origine. L'altération d'origine computationnelle évoque celles physico-chimiques des photographies spirites et médiumniques du XIXe siècle. Ainsi la dimension occulte des scènes représentées réapparait dans la matière même de l’image.
