Flannel Bush - Fremontodendron

Flannel Bush - Fremontodendron growing on site at Las Pilitas California Native Plant Nursery in Escondido California. Native to southwestern United States and northwest Mexico.

This could be 'Pacific Sunset' Flannel bush because of its size. Thrives in sandy, well draining soil on slopes. Very sensitive to overwatering once established. One summer soak past it's 2nd or 3rd year can kill it supposedly. So it's good for any Southwest, Mediterranean, Xeriscape, or Low Water Garden. Requires full sun and plenty of space to grow. I planted one in our yard and it grew a foot in every direction within two months. I know it's going to stand out from the street! Overall appearance of Flannel Bush is strikingly beautiful to me and I hope our neighbors won't mind giving up some view to look at it. Flannel bushes make beautiful hedges, screens or barrier plants. Large, thick bright yellow flowers cover the plant even when it's just 2 feet off the ground. Some people with sensitive skin may develop mild irritation at the site where contact is made with the fuzzy seed pods. The leaves have a leathery and fuzzy texture reminiscent of flannel cloth.
