VW Plattenwagen
1946 VW Plattenwagen in the Prototyp Museum, Hamburg.
The first prototype of the VW Transporter (Type 2), popularly known as "Bulli", is based on a sketch of the dutch VW importer Ben Pon, who has seen the so-called Plattenwagen in 1947 at the Volkswagen plant. These vehicles were used for the internal transport there. The VW factory workers had taken decommissioned VW chassis and modified them so that they could mount a simple steel plate as a loading area in front. Thus the Plattenwagen can be referred to as the origin of the famous VW Transporter.
