My Grandfather's Great Grandfather

Benjamin Dyer of Durham, Androscogin, Maine, born January 2th, 1819, probably in Durham. He was William and Mary Barrett Dyer of RI 5th great grandson. Durham was called Royalborough when it was founded. He was the son of Richard Dyer (b.1787 Durham, ME.), grandson of Micah Dyer (b.1751 Cape Elizabeth, Me.), great grandson of Micah Dyer (1727 Turo, Barnstable, Mass.)

Their children were George Augustus Dyer (1847), James Howard Dyer (1849), Henrietta Dyer (1853), Fannie Dyer (1856), Emma Dyer (1857), Fred Lewis Dyer (1860).

Benjamin Dyer went on the California Gold Rush. I am wondering if this photo was taken after. It's hard to see in the photo, but he had 2 gold earrings. I am guessing that he went in the time period of 1849 and 1853, but that is just a guess. The family story that was passed down is that he found gold, but one day woke up and his partner was gone along with the gold. I wonder if he came home with any money? His wife's clothes in her photo look pretty fashionable, but maybe that was the style.
