sobering times, these

Went out last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. Since she had the 'happy birthday have a free entree on us!' email from Tony Romas we decided to have supper together at, well, Tony Romas. Except that when we pulled in for what I'd consider the dinnertime rush hour, the parking lot was empty.

Like, really obviously empty empty.

I hopped out to check the paper taped to their front door. This was that.

It is this flittering, the exhale of air escaping as door after door, we hear the locks fasten, we overhear stricken employees wondering 'what now?'.

The neighbor who was laid off last week. The friend going through foreclosure. The elderly church couple who needs the food from the pantry they used to volunteer at. The retirement funds after the financial equivalent of a botched gastric bypass.

Things seem to be going quieter.
