Prescribed Fire in Little Bennett Regional Park
On Wednesday, March 13th, Montgomery Parks conducted a small prescribed fire at Little Bennett Regional Park. This prescribed fire was done to knock back woody vegetation, maintain open herbaceous habitat and to promote the germination of native wildflower and grasses. Like rain and sunshine, fire is an essential ecological process in many of Maryland native habitats. Without it the habitat might change irrevocably and the associated species lost. By utilizing prescribed fire we are maintaining the structure of these habitats and promoting their unique plant an animal diversity. Without this essential ecological process it we could lose much of our native biodiversity overtime.
