S A N B O N A S H I : Yakko Shimada

On very formal occasions, such as Hassaku, maiko leave three tapered prongs of skin bare on their neck, as opposed to the usual two. This is called sanbonashi, or "three legs".

 

High ranking maiko wear their hair in a special style known as the Yakko Shimada (Shown above).
