Don't Watch, Don't Click

A shabbily-dressed man peeing into a road-side heap of filth - Delhi in all its ugliness! Poverty must not be blamed for this repulsive, and quite usual, sight. Most of us Delhites simply do not care for the cleanliness once we step out of our homes. We lack respect for the city and we do not care for the well-being of our fellow citizens. Everybody, including the illiterate, is aware it is unhygienic, apart from being terribly unaesthetic, to urinate on public spaces. But we continue with the practice.

But is there a way out to prevent such degradation in public behavior? Few years back, an army officer in the city, in a violent outburst, cut off a man’s penis as he was “showering” the boundary wall of his bungalow. (The officer was later arrested.) There are more peaceful alternatives though. Many owners who have the misfortune of having their houses skirting the busy streets paint their outside walls with the images of popular Hindu Gods. It is a good trick. Nobody in God-fearing India compromises with the purity of the holy men and women!

Better still, there is a popular Hindi slogan seen on many Delhi walls: Dekho Gadha Moot Raha Hai - Look, a Donkey is peeing!
