The Chess Players, ca.1475

Liberale da Verona (Liberale di Jacomo) (Italian, Veronese, 1445–1527/29)

In this fragment of a cassone panel, two lovers are playing chess (the youth is about to checkmate the young woman). Another fragment, showing an earlier moment in the story, hangsnearby, while a third fragment, with male spectators, belongs to the Berenson collection (Florence,Villa I Tatti). The picture was painted in about 1475, when Liberale was employed at Siena illuminating choirbooks.

They all got their hair blown out at the same time.
