Senator Matt Thistlethwaite
Club gets share in funds to go green
Wellington PCYC has welcomed federal government funding to improve the energy efficiency of community buildings and facilities.
The local PCYC will share in $886,022 made possible by the government’s Clean Energy Future and the associated Community Energy Efficiency Program.
Duty Senator for Parkes and former PCYC club president Matt Thistlethwaite said improving energy efficiency was a central element of the Clean Energy Future plan, to help boost productivity in our economy and move Australia towards a low-carbon future.
“Wellington PCYC does fantastic work for young people in the local community. Everyday Club volunteers and staff are on the front line, helping to ensure youth in the region have the best possible shot at achieving their goals in life,” Mr Thistlethwaite said.
“Now, Wellington PCYC is also on the front line in the effort to protect our environment.
“With this money Wellington PCYC will be able to retrofit their lighting, which will save them money and significantly reduce the centre’s carbon footprint.
“As a former PCYC club president it fills me with pride to see this wonderful club movement doing the right thing, not only by themselves and their young clients, but by the rest of the Parkes region as well.”
Local manager Kathyrn Playford believes the funding will assist with new efficient LED lighting which will in the long term create major savings.
NSW PCYC CEO Chris Gardiner said the PCYC movement was pleased to be getting on board in the effort to reduce the nation’s environmental impact.
“Whether working to help young people find their way, or working to reduce our carbon footprint and to usher in a new clean energy future, every effort - no matter how small - counts,” Mr Gardiner said.
“We are proud to be doing our bit and are grateful to the government for their support.”
Wellington was one of 59 NSW PCYCs to receive funding under the Community Energy Efficiency Program’s $42 million first round.
The $200 million Program has multiple rounds.
An announcement on round two will be made later this year.
