Determined
It was a coolish rainy autumn afternoon. Perfect for a cross country race.
This is my nephew Conor as he crosses the finish line in fourth place. It's his last race, and I was asked to be there to grab a picture. Being the good uncle than I am, I said, sure.
My Pentax K5 and the lens I had on are both weather resistant, so a few raindrops weren't going to harm it. I still kept it under my coat for the most part.
The race was supposed to start at 4:45PM. Unbeknownst to me, all the races were moved up because of the threat of lightning. I had just got into position at the finish line, and started setting up my camera, when I look up and see Conor about to cross the line. Yikes!
I got the shot, but because I was in autoselect-focus, Conor's not in as sharp of focus as I would like. That kid who's looking up at the time board, he's in focus. Oh well. I still like the picture.
I like the determined look on Conor's face. He's also in mid-air with nice leg and arm position.
Conor's a senior, ready to go off to college next year. It was his first season as a cross-country runner. He's steadily improved, getting at least fourth place twice that I know of. One of the coaches told him he ought to think about going out for cross-country in college. That's not on his priority list at the moment. I looked at the pack of runners, and am amazed at how well Conor has done for being so new to the sport. Think about running some more, Conor.
Me, I'll do a more thorough setup of my camera at home next time. No more thinking "I'll set it up when I have time since I get there early."
Lesson learned.
