Oh, How My Heart Ached - Shiraoi
I was visiting the Ainu village in Shiraoi, Hokkaido. It is a beautiful place, and the people were so nice - you can see the sea right near here in one of my earlier pictures here.
As part of their exhibition of Ainu culture, they keep huge brown bears and these beautiful dogs, all kept in cages far too small for them. I didn't want to show any pictures of the bears, who were constantly taunted by a seemingly endless barrage of Thai tourists - it's too sad for words.
The dogs, running around their cages in circles, appeared irritated. As soon as I came near, this one jumped up, looking at me with those eyes. Ahh, those eyes! How I wanted to take him home.
It's 2011 now - these kinds of conditions should be banned - as should the use of animals for circuses and other forms of "entertainment". What do you think? Look into this dog's eyes, and then answer...
