Stranger 44/100 -- Ladesha

This is Stranger 44/100 in my 100 Strangers Project. See more photos from other photographers participating in this project at the 100 Strangers Project page.

After taking Christian's portrait we were back on track to head over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Once we got there, we realized what a terrific decision it was to make the move. There happened to be an event going on--group zumba and salsa dance lessons being put on by Pyro Art Solutions as part of the prelude events to the Philadelphia Caribbean Festival that was coming up on Saturday. There were a lot of people everywhere and many different possibilities for backgrounds. There were 15 foot tall, skinny orange flags that flanked the large cement pad that sits directly in front of the museum, just across the parkway where the event was being held. Paco and I both identified them as a background we definitely wanted to use.

After being there for hardly a few minutes I saw my Stranger 44. Her face was just radiant and beautiful and I knew I wanted to ask for her portrait. She was in the middle of a conversation with a friend so I stood off a few feet away and decided where my BG was going to be. Soon there was a break in the conversation and Stranger 44 began heading in my direction, so I made my move.

Ladesha agreed easily with a gorgeous smile but asked if we could do it quickly as she had to get back to work. She was an employee for Pyro Art Solutions and was working the event. I said we could certainly do that and as I had already picked out the orange flag I wanted to use which was just a few feet away, we got straight to work. I popped out my silver reflector and had Ladesha hold it at about a 45 degree angle at her waist camera left. The silver reflector was quite strong and acted as key light here while the sun (late afternoon light behind Ladesha camera right) acted as a rim light for her hair. The flag was blowing nicely in the breeze and stretched out enough to mostly fill the frame, though I did crop down to cut out bits that were not covered by the flag.

I shot a few frames and that was that. We were chatting a bit while shooting--I kept telling here how beautiful she was--and I did get a really great smile as she began laughing. Sadly, that shot was quite out of focus, though, so I didn't want to use it. This one at least was mostly in focus and I was pretty happy with it.

Thanks so much for giving me a quick minute Ladesha, and the event was very cool!
