Picture a Day January 23, 2010 - Common Gray Fox at Harmony Ridge Cemetery

At the cemetery of the long-gone community of Harmony Ridge, I spotted a Common Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) - quite common throughout the United States, but this is the first one I had clearly spotted in two years of hiking and exploring around the state. As I was walking through the tombstones, the fox suddenly jumped out of a low-hanging tree less than ten feet in front of me and bounded away -- remarkably within a couple of seconds I was still able to bring the camera up, zoom in and snap the picture. Hopefully in the future I will be have the opportunity to take a better shot. Harmony Ridge was originally established on high ground near where the San Saba River meets with the Colorado River; the community center recently burned down, now all that remains is a rebuilt open-air enclosure and the old cemetery.
