shikara grocer
dig it on black
One of the many locals making their way across Dal Lake selling everything from postcards to saffron to light bulbs. The shikara sellers pushing tourist items were (and are) notorious, and difficult to get rid of, especially when the houseboat owners are in on it. "He is a friend of mine, just look," is a pretty common statement.
Nevertheless, it's not as big a bother as Lonely Planet would have you believe, and the ones who catered to the locals were very friendly, always smiling and saying hello or good morning, and would generally leave me alone, and in return I would buy fruit from them every so often, even though it was much more expensive - even after the barter game - than buying in markets on land.
