have a save journey
I awoke just as the sun was coming up and sat on the ledge of my window from my third story hotel room, watching Jammu begin to come to life and waiting for my share jeep. By the afternoon, I would be in Srinagar, lounging on a houseboat and finally able to get some writing in.
Traffic tapered off the further north we traveled, and eventually we were the only car on the road - myself, five Kashmiris, and four Indians. The Kashmiris were intrigued by my travels, and took the opportunity to ask why so many of "us people" travel. I turned down their offer of cigarettes, instead producing my last cigar, which I lit and passed around for them to try.
They took a liking to me, and we talked nearly the entire way despite a sizable language barrier. When we stopped for (delicious Kashmiri) lunch they wouldn't let me eat with my hands, insisting the restaurant's proprietor bring me a fork. They dropped me at Dal Gate in Srinagar with a final word about how not to get ripped off by houseboat touts, and off they went, smoking my cigar.
