Madeleine
(Stranger 2/100)
While doing an errand in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, I came across this gorgeous brick facade of an old building. The sun was going in and out of the afternoon clouds, which left me with either a lovely golden hour glow, or a flat and unappealing gray. Couple that with trying to find an interesting subject to shoot and I wasn't sure I'd get the shot I wanted before the sun went down.
Cue Madeleine! As she walked up I asked if she would be down with a portrait and explained the 100 Strangers group on Flickr. She laughed and thought it was a pretty cool concept.
Keeping with the ice-breaker theme, I asked her favorite word, shooting her while she thought. Most of the pictures I got were of her looking to the side and thinking about that word. Finally, she turned to me and said "juicy." This was the smile she gave after saying "juicy" a couple times. Then she added, "I don't know why that's been on my mind so much, but that's a word I've been thinking of a lot lately."
We talked a bit more about how fun it is to make connections in New York City over things like stranger portraits ("that's what you do in New York," she said), then I asked her what is one thing she longed to have that she doesn't currently.
"Security," she said without hesitation. When I pressed for more info on what that meant to her, she declined and said she wasn't prepared to talk about that.
We parted with a smile and wished each other well. I do hope she finds the security she is looking for.
Taken as part of a project for the 100 Strangers group.
