The great Alaskan railroad journey

The White Pass & Yukon Route train passes this bridge-and-tunnel combination at mile 18.8, just before it reaches White Pass Summit.

The journey so far has taken me from sea level to the 865-foot (873 metre) high summit. Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is one of the engineering wonders of the world. It is designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – along with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.
