Gorgone Checkerspot - Chlosyne gorgone

When I found this butterfly along the trails at Riveredge Nature Center, I first thought it was a very common species - the Pearl Crescent. I figured it was just another common butterfly, but there were no other butterflies around at the time, so I decided to photograph it. That's when I noticed the ventral side of the wing, which looks nothing like a Pearl Crescent. I knew this was one of the checkerspot butterflies I haven't seen before. This happens to be the first photo record of the Gorgone Checkerspot in Ozaukee county. The butterfly was very cooperative with my camera. I took many shots, hoping for a few great ones. This is one of the best.
