Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa
Location: Riveredge Nature Center, Newburg, WI
I felt lucky to spot this mourning cloak butterfly today. These are around all year long (they hibernate as adults). Even so, the mourning cloak is still one of my favorites.
Sometimes, if you listen closely, you can hear them fly. They make a dry papery sound when their wings flap and rub against each other. I've experienced this sound with both Mourning Cloaks and Red Admirals.
