Rush Hour Lights

You can see the video version of this timelapse at the 28 second mark. (it should start there if you go to the link) www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PwS-E7pnFs&t=28s

I'm not sure if this was actually rush hour (that might be every hour in Bangkok) but it was sometime in the evening (around sunset) and the traffic was plentiful!

I set up on a pedestrian bridge over one of the many roads that leads into the giant traffic circle around Victory Monument. (see previous photos)

It's kind of mesmerizing watching the the traffic, much like staring into a campfire, or watching the ocean waves roll in. There's a general structure to it, but there's also a good amount of "chaos". The motorbikes "bend the rules" the most, weaving in and out of traffic, and breaking up the more rigid structure that the cars and buses follow.

It actually works out better for everyone in the end, but more so for the bikes, because when traffic stops, the bikes keep moving, carefully maneuvering between cars until they reach the group of bikes "leading the pack" (the pack being all the traffic between 2 sets of traffic lights)

So the bikes get to "cut the line" every time traffic stops (or even just slows) and in turn, the bikes take up less space, so you can fit more of the larger vehicles on the road. Win - win!

I made this time stack by combining 138 photos into one image.
