Slow Explosion

This was one of those sunsets with 2 layers of clouds, that didn't stack well. The lower level clouds would momentarily cover up the colourful clouds above them, creating gaps in the cloud trails, which made the sky look undesirably messy. So I tried some different blending modes, and found that the mean blending mode produced a much nicer looking time stack in this specific case.

The mean blending mode averages all the pixels over a given number of photos. For example, if I had stacked 100 photos using the mean blending mode, and half of the photos were red and the the other half were white (the order doesn't matter) then the result would be an image that was pink. (because 50% red and 50% white makes pink)

If 3/4 of the photos were red and 1/4 were white, then you would get a darker shade of pink then the half and half example.

I made this image by combining 100 photos into one image using the "mean" blending mode in photoshop.
