The concrete shell, which housed a cinema, is a remaining element of the Beirut City Center, a mixed-use complex designed in 1965 by Lebanese Architect Joseph Philippe Karam. At the time it was the largest shopping mall in the Middle East. The destruction of the civil war in beginning in 1975 left the structure damaged beyond repair. Most of the original towers that surrounded the egg were razed but the egg itself remains along with some of the first two floors adjacent and much of the several levels below the surface.
