"Santiago is the very old Cuban fisherman whose been unable to catch a fish for eighty four days. Santiago has an apprentice called Manolin. Manolin adores the old man but his parents tell him he must stop fishing with Santiago because he is not catching any fish or making any money."
Ernest Hemingway, "The old man and the sea" 1952.
These words remind me of problems traditional fishermen are currently struggling with caused by overfishing done by huge and sophisticated vessels that sweep away the bottom of the sea, polution, bycatch (the killing of many species while fishing others), fishnet sizes, lost fishnets responsible for the killings of hundreds, may be thousands, of mammals and other related problems. We have to learn to preserve what we have while we still have time. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium ( I love the MBAYAQ) and learn what you can do to help Save the Oceans!
