Miltie's, Wicker Park - 1959

Store was located at the southeast corner of Leavitt and North Av. This was my brother-in-law's preferred "hangout." I chose this photo because of the interesting artifacts in the picture: the stacks of Polish-language newspapers in the foreground, the long-forgotten Jay's Popcorn and lastly the tube-testing console. These testers were in a lot of stores. When your TV or radio went dead, you pulled out all of the tubes and carried them down to the store to find out which one was bad. In the bottom of the console was a large storage area where the replacement tubes were kept for sale.
