Dickensian youth - Wicker Park, Chicago ca. 1957

Coming from a family of 7 kids (I was the middle child) with two older brothers I can certainly empathize with this little guy. New clothes were never a part of your wardrobe, only "hand-me-downs". Back in the '50's Wicker Park and Bucktown were "working class" neighborhoods with a lot of families barely able to get by. Many households didn't have cars. In fact, you could probably buy a new car back then for what some current residents now pay for their bicycle or baby stroller. Photo taken by my brother-in-law. Tri-X film scanned with an Epson 4490.
