John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was born on this date in 1917. IMHO his greatest contribution to music was his introduction and incorporation of latin rhythms into jazz. I know he was a bebop pioneer, but I believe he made jazz far richer with the incredible diversity of his music. He was truly an American original.
