Mosaic above Bas Relief, Church of the Dormition
One of six side chapels which flank the main altar in the Church of the Dormition in Jerusalem.
The Latin text is a nod to the German Benedictines who rebuilt this abbey: "Sancta colonia dei gratia Romane ecclesie fidelis filia" or translated, "Holy Cologne, by the Grace of God, faithful daughter of the Roman church".
This mosaic depicts the Lamb of God surrounded by his earthly "roots", his genealogical "tree", as documented in the Gospels (Mark and Luke).
This depiction of Jesus' genealogy was common in Medieval art.
Israel, Jerusalem.
