4-VEC DM 046 (S25S) - Ryde St Johns Road Depot, Isle of Wight.

A rather sorry-looking faded and sun-bleached 4-VEC Driving Motor Car (DM) S25S from set 046 was languishing amongst the weeds and the scrap metal at the rear of Ryde Depot on July 25th 1978. The car was once London Transport 3313 and had been built by MCW in 1927. It was converted for use on the Isle of Wight at Acton Works in May 1966 and entered service as part of 4-VEC set 046 on March 22nd 1967 (Cars 25, 46, 49 & 8). S25S was fire damaged at Ryde in 1975 and whilst it was withdrawn from service as beyond economic repair, the other three cars of 046 became a spare 'part' short set. S25S was eventually scrapped at Ryde in October 1982. In the left background is a relic from steam days and loco-hauled trains, a former Southern Railway PMV Van that had been built in 1939 as SR No.1283. It was transferred to the Isle of Wight in 1950 and renumbered to 1047. Following the end of steam in December 1966, the van became a store at Ryde Depot and renumbered in the internal user fleet as 082056. It was eventually scrapped at Ryde in 1989.
