L'Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel - Musée du Louvre

Napoléon at the Tuileries

The creation of rue de Rivoli in 1801 entails the demolition of the Capuchin and Feuillant monasteries. The first arcaded town house is built in 1806. Napoléon revives the royal plan to join the Louvre and Tuileries palaces, and creates a thoroughfare on the site of the future Carrousel triumphal arch. Spectacular temporary buildings are erected for his wedding to Marie-Louise, including a portico, a triumphal arch, and a grandstand: festivals and celebrations return to the gardens.
