Soaring to a height of 374 feet, the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore is a wonder of ingenuity nearly six centuries after its construction. Its grandeur and artistry were meant to outshine those of any other structure in early Renaissance Italy, elevating Florence over rival cities. Though many believed it was too big and ambitious to build, architect Filippo Brunelleschi succeeded, using methods that experts don’t fully understand even today.
