Nothing But Flowers

Springtime is my favourite season of the year, well after the silly one anyway; the promise of things to come and perfect for the garden with warm temperatures and precipitation, lots of it. Although apologies if you live in the Midlands, pond features are probably more appropriate than bedding plants right now!

Unfortunately it's also perfect for weeds! I used to verge on obsessive weeding, (other more personally damaging and socially unacceptable obsessions are available) but unfortunately they always beat me; so far it's MD 0, Weeds 57.

Lately however I have adopted a far more laissez-faire attitude I guess laissez-arse would be appropriate. Although what is a weed if not just a plant in the wrong place. Nowadays I just accept them as alternative ground cover, although if you look closely they do have their charm and beauty with flowers just on a much smaller scale than their more highly bred cousins.

That's where macro really comes into it, this is an example of a relatively common weed, Herb Robert, Geranium robertianum for the nerdy types. It grows well in shady, rocky areas and has quite a strange characteristic smell. The best thing about it apart from the pretty flowers is that it is such an easy weed to pull up after flowering!

Macro also reveals the details you miss with the naked eye, like cartoon faces created by the stamens, this one could do with wiping his nose!
