Visualising Story Structure
This is really hard to explain. But I'll try:
The large circle represents a timeline of a plot.
The large circle is divided into segments that are chapters.
got it? ... ok, now things get tricky:
The 'bobbles' which are sitting on the large circle, is a character plot line that weaves in and out of the chapters along the main (circle) plot. A second character plot line also weaves around the main plot circle (which then makes the 'bobbles' which i'll refer to as character 'arc's').
The rising and falling of each character arc shows the intensity of action or dialogue per chapter.
You'll notice that each chapter starts and ends on an intense peak - this is because the ending of one chapter must set up the next chapter.
The middle of the chapter shows the pivotal moment - this can be a turning in the storyline, a clash of characters, an exchange of dialogue or something similar.
The circular nature of the diagram, shows how the end must return to the beginning in some way - to show how the characters have changed.
This diagram is drawn simply to represent a basic structure. This can become incredibly complex if planning out a full story.
This serves as a great reminder in my head about how the characters should interact on a very basic level, in order for the reader to enjoy the story.
