Black Tor (Princetown)

Black Tor (104)

Capped Bore Hole 1

I have often stumbled across these funny metal things around Black Tor and often wondered what they were. I seem to remember when training for Ten Tors in the distance past I was told they were rain gauges! They are not. When doing some reading on the subject Dartmoor Leats I stumbled upon an article about Water Management in Upper Meavy and Hart Tor Brook Valleys which explained everything. Please see link below for the full explanation, but in short they are capped bore holes used to investigate the geology of the area with the intention of siting a dam and forming reservoir covering the Hart Tor Brook and Upper Meavy Valley up to the 360m contour line. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the granite wasn't sound enough and eventually in 1893 work started on Burrator Dam lower down the valley and was completed in 1898. I have numbered the Bore Hole in line with the linked post, there are twelve in total and are surprisingly easy to find. Please click the link below to learn more.
