Mt Dare Hotel
This is the Mount Dare Hotel in outback South Australia. It's the last chance to fill the car with fuel and top up water supplies before setting off across the Simpson desert. Alternatively, it's a great place to relax and grab a cold beer after you've crossed the Simpson Desert.
When we passed through another couple - father and daughter - were there, bravely traversing the outback on motorcycles, an endeavour which I'm sure would be extremely challenging, especially in 50cm deep bulldust. As we arrived they were topping off the enlarged fuel tanks of their machines. This is them at the bar.
Sadly, the lady was touring in memory of her late husband, doing a trip that they had planned together but not done before he died. I imagine he wasn't very old as she was only, I guess, in her 30s.
The pub has a tradition of hanging up old stubbie holders; you can see them here in their hundreds. My companion, Steve, had brought his old Mt Dare item with him and it now hangs proudly with the others. He bought two new ones, one each. I use mine at home if it ever gets warm enough to need it to keep my beer cold.
